Hey! This thing is still a Work in Progress. Files, instructions, and other stuff might change!

Skull Tower

Skull Tower by onebitpixel Sep 19, 2014

Every dungeon needs a tower 'o skulls

  • I was playing around with assembling something like this using a variety of different skulls on Thingiverse but the manifold/face collisions and polygon count would always seem to crash the different programs I used and were just too unwieldy; I finally found a good mix of skulls that work well together after some mild modifications. There are still some odd bits of geometry in here but for the most part they print in about 35minutes; they can probably be optimized a bit more; I am finding that different programs output a variety of different stl model sizes and no two work the same in terms of efficiency/optimizing.

  • This is loosely based on an old Ral Partha tower of skull metal miniature I have and some books that I've been scanning through about The Catacombs of Paris; I created this for use in a Warhammer Quest terrain setting and a Library of Whispers scenario.

  • Two models of different height and size are included. If I make up a round base/top I will update the files. Tallest scale height is 50mm w/around 30mm base; easily scaled as needed or use the smaller version which has a few more skulls

  • Split file included; so you can print in two parts and 'weld' it back together w/o using supports

  • updated; apparently I left some floating polygons during the split for the right side so it makes it difficult to lay it flat on the build plate; the new file is: skulltower-_square_02_right_fixed

Bit of a PITA to fix. Only two out of the 8 files are usable. These also need to be run through netfabbs STL fixing service then you need to cut the first couple of layers off the bottom of each object (once you've got it rotated correctly) as the flat edge isn't flat.

Once all that was done I scaled the whole object to 200% then scaled the Y axis a further 150%.

I'm really pleased with the outcome but would love to print one at 0.05 resolution but it'd take 30+ hours!

Another annoyance is that it used up all my silver filament so I'm having to print the other side in purple.

Anyway many thanks to onebitpixel as once you can print it properly its a great model!

This is really really awesome, but not very functional. How about book ends? A right angle of "base material" and then a big pile of skulls that support each book-end, that would be functional, considering that most people (myself included) can't print something much bigger than that anyway.

Pretend the @ signs are skulls:

Any chance of a version w/o the top plate (just a pile of skulls?)

check out the file; skull_tower_only_repaired.stl
hope that helps.

So i printed the left pretty good but the right has issues when you try to print it standing up. The printer tries to print it above the build plate? This happen with anyone else?

Is all the overhang not an issue for people? I havent tried yet but I feel like the overhangs would kick my ass!

Would you consider a paid commission for something similar that I could print?

sure, i'd be up to working on something like that; send me a pm describing what you're looking for.

Hey onebitpixel,

I like your skulltower, looks like a great pîece for my warhammer quest settings. Do you happen to have a dxf or dwg file of it? I'dd like to try my hand at making a skull archway, but I can't seem to convert the stl files to dxf or dwg to use with my autocad program. I might miss something tho, as I'm still quite new at this. :)

in any case, awesome job!

Kind regards,

Cool idea to make a scull tower from the obelisk. :)
