There are now a wide variety of cheap floor lamps available, some of which have both an upward-pointing main light and a downward-pointing reading light. Unfortunately, the plastic shades can't take the heat trapped in the downward-pointing reading light, and essentially disintegrate. My improved replacement closely copies the shape of the original shade, but with the important difference that it has vent holes to allow the heat to escape, as you can see in the photos.

I can't guarantee that this shade will work for you, but I'm pretty sure replacing the original shade with an identical one wouldn't work.


Not much to say. Easily and quickly (for such a large part) prints without supports in the orientation given. It took about $1 worth of white PLA to print it in under an hour on a MakerGear M2.

The shade attaches using a black plastic screw-in retaining ring, which was intact, so I did not print a replacement for it.

The shades are made for CFL and LED lamps and when an Incandescent is used they just get destroyed from all of that heat.

That would make sense, but the original shade was marked saying no more than 60W bulb -- not too many 60W CFLs out there, let alone 60W LEDs. It also uses a dimmer switch, which wouldn't work with many of the more advanced lighting options. It probably would have been fine with a 60W pointed up. Incidentally, many of the newer units of similar design now use glass shades....

Maybe where you are but I have been using 60 watt CFL for decades (75 and 100 watt as well) and just last week picked up 2 60 watt LED bulbs (one was dimmable and one was not) and both were less than 6 dollars in total at WalMart (I was shocked). The Dimmable one, at Wallyworld was about $3.80 and I am very surprised at how well it looks and works.

I know this in the USA all 60watt Incandescent light bulbs are now illegal to be sold and only what is left in stock can be and next year the 40 watt bulbs go. First was 100 then 75 now 60 and finally, next year, 40 watt goes.

Most of what I've seen is "60W equivalent" -- not actually 60W. Incandescent bulbs put out much more heat than light, so it isn't hard to have a bulb as low as 15 or 20W put out the same light level. Even if it is 60W, the alternative technologies put out less heat (well, except Halogens). Obviously, such bulbs should help shade life... but so should the little holes I added. ;-)

That said, this wasn't my lamp, but the bedside lamp of my 100-year-old Aunt. I wasn't about to tell her she can't use the bulbs she has, but the next round of replacements will probably be dimmable LEDs.... I have a lot of CFLs in my home, but I hate CFLs -- I don't understand why people have been so happy to load their homes with these toxic little nasties that are prone to ballast trouble.

That is what I meant as no CFL is going to suck up 60/75/100 watts and why all of those in incandescent bulbs are now illegal, and next year the 40 watt as well, because they really take up that much power.

When a lamp says 60 watt max they meant for the plain old bulb so I do 75 or 100 watts EQUIVALENT light output since the heat generated, and the real watts being used, are far far less.

I love the little holes you made as most shades should have those but everything made today is to be replaced within 2 years. :( I hate the modern way of life.
