I wanted to print the Eiffel Tower model large. Starting with the 4-part files (from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:32825 ), all but the bottom piece could print at 350% on my Replicator 2. To print the bottom part I had to cut it in half using Blender ( http://www.blender.org/ ).

At 350% even the railing prints at a .1 mm layer height. RepG kept crashing right at the end of slicing the bottom halves so I ended up using MiracleGrue for those pieces.

I printed the bottom halves upside down so the main arch isn't a giant difficult bridge.

Print times (top to bottom):
EiffelTowercut4_fixed @ .1mm: 5 hours
EiffelTowercut3.2_fixed @ .1mm: 7 hours
EiffelTowerCut2_fixed @ .1mm: 21 hours
EiffelTowerCut1_halved @ .27mm: 5 hours x 2
Total build time: 43 hours
Total weight: 338 grams
Total height: 41.5cm / 16.3 inches

Can you share the original files in step to some modifications?

so did your makerbot actually print something that tall or

Yes, in five parts, then I glued them together.

sorry, where are the other parts?

Follow the first link in the description, the top three parts from that thing were used without modification. Since I only modified the base piece I didn't feel like I should duplicate the STLs from the other thing.

shells, infill? Any problems with printing w/o support?

I think I just used the MakerWare defaults for .27mm: 2 shells, 10% infill. No support required when it is printed upside down.

Printing upside down? How can i configure that? Plse help, Frans.

I just uploaded a flipped version. I also made some repairs in NetFabb.

thanks, that works!
Why did you split in half? just upsidedown should work also i think.

I wanted to print it out at 350 percent. It would not fit on my Rep2 bed without splitting it in half. All of the other parts from the 4-part version fit fine at 350 percent.

I don't quite understand how the split part helps. In cura the original file will scale to 270 x 270 x 108.72MM but this split file will only scale to 270 x 135.26 x 103.43MM so in the end the split file is shorter than the original. Am i doing something wrong?
