RAR Print is 3d printer that you can made by printing almost all it's parts and use same parts from old CD|DVD ROMs.
TIP: Write youre questions :) I Try to explain all moments

Print head: UV diode + CD|DVD drive optic system

You'l need:
-2 kg of PLA plastic ( parts shown were printed using it)
-300x400 mm - organic glass ( orange)
-5 or 10 /// CD|DVD - ROMs ( with work stepper drives )
-1 dvd ROM optic system + 1 UV LED ( Ultraviolet diode) Characteristics of UV diode may be any ( ~400 nm light wave, and power 100 -1000 mW) it depend what photopolimer you want to use.It installed instead laser diod into dvd ROM optic system

  • Arduino Mega 2560
  • Shield for CD|DVD ROM drives
  • 5 CD|DVD ROM step motors drivers ( Example A4988)
  • wires and bus
  • Glass or plastic reservour ( For Makerjuice Photopolymer)
  • simple current and voltage regulator for UV Print head
  • Customized Marlin
    Attention: All printable parts oriented not correct to 3D printing. You must orient it before printing.Also you can chop parts into some pieces and print them ( If you have limited build volume into your 3D printer).

What type of Glas is it that protects the Resin from Light and mutch more important YOU from 400nm UV Leds?

The glass I see appears to be acrylic safety sheets, of the 410 variety at https://www.lasersafetyindustries.com/Acrylic_Laser_Safety_Windows_s/553.htm, but possibly something similar from another vendor.

Do you have a rough cost for this printer? Thanks!

I think you made a mistake. If you use the "non-commercial" clause, it is not open-source. You can check the open-source definition here: https://opensource.org/osd-annotated - point 6 explicitly says that you can not forbid commercial use.

Also, I could not find the firmware you used for controlling the galvos. Would you kindly point me to it?

Open-source - it is open tehnology, that anybody can use for their purposes.

Firmware is - Marlin

This is not what open-source is. To be open-source, you cannot forbid commercial use. It is a technical, "official" deffinition with 10 points to comply, as I have quoted here. If you say it is open-source and you use the "NC" clause, you are misleading people.

I could not find galvo control code in Marlin, how do you configure the motors? E.g. Marlin just moves the motors in a planar way (X-Y-Z axis) or with delta coordinates.

I might. I free all my projects, code and videos under open source licenses and I only get involved in open-source projects too. As a frantic open-source fan, nothing puts me off more than a "NC" clause, it means that commercial use, one of the main levers for making a project go right, is tightly limited, to the point of being stuck.

Regarding firmware, I was just informed of a firmware that can control galvanometers, and it is open-source. Maybe it can help you: https://github.com/beardface/LAMPS


I want to do this printer, but i have a few questions:
1 In which program do you create track's layer from 3D model? Slicer/Cura would be good for sla?
2 Can I change a UV diod to a laser with optical from Blue-Ray [e.g.:http://www.diyouware.com/node/161 they have 405nm but i don't know a power- at least it have 110mV]? In this conficuration i must have a voltage divider whith parameters from your schemat or different resistance?
3 What for is a second UV diod (in imaterials list have a two diod UV] to axis XY we must one diod or two diod [and how link it together]?


1) Track's layers can be created in any GCODE generator programm like Sli3er and etc. I prefer use Sli3er.
2)Yes you can. But, if you choose blue-ray optical system, you need to use blue ray's laser diode and simple voltage and current regulator ( could be pick up from cheap laser pointer). On Makerjuice G resin at least 50-100 mWatt power UV LED are need tostart polimerisation reaction. Also power depend on what material between liquid resin and UV source and how far it from UV source.
3) I use only one UV lED.

thanks for sharing this. We wanted to build this printer as a project for university, but one or two essential parts seem to be missing. It would be much work to construct them ourselves, so can you please upload them? The missing parts are the ones where the X- and Z-axis dirves are build on, they connect the printer to shell.

Or simple, make your own experiment with photopolymer resin and UV LED. How much power and time need to curve your resin. It's depend on type of resin and power of UV LED ( I'd use 150 mW and 500 mW UV LED). I'll try to do this experiment to and show process in video soon.

Since you are printing from the bottom, have you considered adding a tilt function for the layer-peeling effect, or did your prototype show it was not necessary?
Also, did you opt to use a UV (Blue) laser diode or a regular diode for the printer?
The document is a bit conflicting with the introduction saying UV Laser Diode and the parts list listing a regular diode.
I would think that the spread of a regular diode would be a concern though, but it would be much cheaper than a laser diode with driver.
And as well, introduction says 5-10 optic drives needed and the later parts list 3. I know it is still a work in progress though. :)


Andreas, UV LED (not laser diode), it's low cost. Power of diode depend of type photopolymer resin. You need old optic drives or broken.

hey, can you upload the dovelled parts for the assembly. also have you made the schematics for connections??

Have you consider to put some units together and sell them? I would love to build one but not enough time.

At last! I'm super excited to see if I can build a version of your design, but sections 1.4 and 1.5 are still in Russian. Can you update the documents with translations?

EDIT: I went ahead and used Google Translate on the two sections I mentioned and added the result as a comment on each one. If they work, you can just copy paste those in place. Hope that helps.

Edit II: I went pretty hard updating the instructions and formatting. Hope the changes help!


Are you still waiting on Drivers and Ramps? If you don't mind me asking, what is the hold up? I have an extra driver here, id be happy to donate if that is needed.

this is a very interesting project and a really cool and functional design! I´ve already collected most of the recomended parts and will give it a try as soon as possible.

Do you use any kind of focusing lense?
At work we´ve build an µ-stereolithographie device which uses diode lasers and focusing lenses. I can´t imagine how an UV-LED can generate a precise spot for a good x-y resolution (even for non microscopic applications).

I do. It is focusing system (the laser system) from cd or dvd rom. Please read this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD : Laser and optics . It is good idea to use blu-ray rom, because it have 405 nm laser, but we need make driver for this laser.

The best one in my mind would be youtube. On this platform you can tell and show what you are doing. i that won't work why not make a free blog with wordpress and post your story and pictures on it. Besides that you can put the instructions and the pictures on thingiverse!

Hi, Ceri ! I'd used Makerjuice, 1 liter. You can find it in heir web site. Also you can use any UV curved photopolimers, because UV diod could be installed into CD|DVR ROM optic system against laser diode. Characteristics of UV diode may be any ( ~400 nm light wave, and power 100 -1000 mW) it depend what photopolimer you want to use.
