The da Vinci calibration process is a bit time consuming so I made this thing to try cut down the time spent calibrating. It is designed to fit the $14 Harbor Freight machinists dial indicator (Item#623) which is accurate down to .001 inches. This attachment thing fits the extruder stepper motor very snugly and doesn’t move at all once attached. It only measures about 60% of the front part of the bed area due to it extending toward the front of the printer but this is enough to get the bed level very close while cold. I adjust the bed as close to zero at all corners, 0.05 inches at most. After that I run the regular calibration process and usually only need 0-2 adjustments to get it to pass.
Print it using the 'Good' da Vinci settings:
- Supports checked
- 3D Density = Low 10%
- Shells = Normal
- Layer Height = 0.3
- Speed = Standard
Glue the two halves together with super glue being sure they are oriented correctly then attach the dial using the printed pin. The pin fits very snugly.
