This is a viola bow holder that was created for Shea. Shea was born without fingers on her right hand but she wanted to be able to play her viola. This gauntlet allows her to hold the bow. This was designed so that the bow holder could be used with a cello, violin or viola bow as long as the bow design is similar to the one pictured above. The bow is dismantled in order to attach the bow and no hardware is necessary other than velcro straps and padding to line the inside of the gauntlet. I have included files for the unjoined gauntlet and bow holder in case people want to scale the gauntlet separate from the bow holder (as the bow holder dimensions should not change). Simple scale the gauntlet to the required size and then boolean union the bow holder to the gauntlet. I have included Rhino files for this so that this is possible.

At the moment this bow holder has a fixed wrist, but I am currently developing a moveable wrist holder that will be published here as well.

Will this work on a violin bow

Yes, it should.

Great job! What did you do to get the plastic so smooth looking? Thanks

My string teaching colleagues and I were checking out your design at a tech inservice.
I have a student with Cerebral Palsy in his right hand and needs adaptations in order to better hold the bow.
Your design looks really great!
Have you made any design changes since 2014/2015?

Hi there! My daughter, almost 9, was born without a left hand. She had half the palm and a small thumb. Was wondering if this can be used for her left hand? She desperately wants to play the violin and I've been scouring the internet and found you! I saw all the files, have a friend with a 3d printer but didn't know if this can be reversed or if you knew how to make it for a left hand? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! Your daughter should be able to use this for her left hand. The design is symmetrical so it should work. The only thing that might need to be changed is the scale of the arm/hand portion if she has a smaller or larger hand than Shea. I can always help with fitting if you send me an photo of your daughter's hand with a ruler in the picture. It needs to be taken directly over the top so that your camera is NOT at an angle in relation to the ruler and her hand. Just let me know.

I would love it if you could do that! Where should i send the pic to? Thank you!

I'm a violinist, and an engineer. If you want to chat re the design, let me know. Take care, tb

Thanks smokeandlights!
