The star with LEDs lighting up each point was nice but I wanted a multi-color experience so I modified the star points to perfectly fit these 12mm diffused thin digital RGB LED pixels that are driven by the WS2801.
You can buy these LED's at several places, such as Adafruit: https://www.adafruit.com/products/322 (which is a string of 25.. good for two stars)
You will need 11 copies of star_point.stl, one copy of star_point_bottom.stl. The table and tree mounts are patterns for mounting the star on top of a tree or just having it sit around on a table looking pretty.
The whole thing which includes the electronics, the source code, and the controller box that holds the electronics can be found on github at: https://github.com/scanner/eimp_christmas_tree_star
