In this project we’re building a handheld gaming console! This DIY gadget has 12 buttons, an analog joystick, stereo speakers and a 5” HDMI display. We’re using the Raspberry Pi A+ and RetroPie image. We call it.... Super Game Pi!

Bigger than our DIY GameBoy, this project has support for way more games, a bigger screen, sound and all ze buttons!

To make your own Super Game Pi, you’ll have to 3D print the enclosure, hack an SNES controller and solder electronics.

You can pick the Raspberry Pi A+ and all the parts to build this project from Adafruit. We’ll need some hand tools and access to a 3D Printer.

I am thinking about making a portable console that uses the Rasbeary pi, but my soldering skills are not very high. I was wondering how much soldering it takes for this build, and is it difficult to solder all the pieces together.

You can fit a rpi3 if you remove the USB ports and dremel the board down a bit

You could buy one of their kits. The ones with the PCBs in.

What can i do instead of cutting up a snes controller? i can use the buttons but is there a pcb board or something, instead of the snes board?

I noticed a small typo, in the instructions where you list the components you have a " 66 000mAh battery ". One zero too much I think :-)

ANyway this could be updated for the newest pi?

I just finished the basic setup and started to test. The system says there is no gamepad recognized, press a button to configure or F4 to reboot. I have checked my wiring, and all looks good. Any idea on how to get it recognized?

did you use arduino and upload the firmware to the board?

I used the parts from adafruit, which I did not think they were arduino based. How would I upload firmware to the board?

ok, i just looked, no there's no arduino boards, i did the other project like this and there were arduino related boards, when i first did a retro pi project i had the same problem but it went away when i went to the retro pi web site and downloaded retro pi version 3. something beta, its a 2015 version so maybe you could have the same issue, apart from that i have no idea.

would it be possibe to provide the original 123DX files to make alterations to fit a pi2 and classic D pad instead of joystick?

Yes, thanks for asking! Both A+ and B+ models are now available. The 123DX files with "union" in the title are combined +merged, the others contain all the solids before combing. There's also a DPAD version. Hope this helps!

I can't find the version for the 2B I would love to be able to do this but i want more N64 playablility. Where are these files located? Also how easy would it be to use a slimmer battery?

The B+ model doesn't seem to fit in the version you provided. I have a Raspberry Pi 2, which should be the same form factor, but the screen clips hit the USB ports and the ethernet port hits the top and prevents the screw holes from lining up.

I just downloaded the Rasp Pi2b version and was wondering if there is any information on how to wire the D-pad in place of the joystick.

How hard would it be to replace the A+ with a model B or B+?

I just saw this project on your website and I am really excited to try and make this along with my students! I was wondering if the L and R shoulder buttons are 3D printable, or if they come with one of the purchased components?

Thanks! We just uploaded our L and R shoulder button STL file here (it's just one file) - They can be printed in flexible filament like Ninjaflex! Please send us pics of your build - we'd love to feature it!!
