Summary

Turns the MakerBot addative CNC machine into a subtractive CNC machine!

(Well, assuming it works)

This is a fairly hacky-looking first cut, but it slices and I can't see any severe mechanical failings. I figure this one can run under the "get out the door quickly, then iterate" model.

I'm including the blender file, which has in it a caliper-captured model of the Dremel tool. It's not the most precise model ever but I think it's accurate enough where it counts to ensure a snug fit.

Instructions

Print out two each of the bracket and holder files. Squeeze the dremel in between the holders, then slide the brackets onto them. Attach the whole assembly to the CNC as you would the Plastruder module.

I made a Dremel-Head for the RepMan yesterday and a video proves that it indeed does work,

Feel free to adapt it to the Makerbot and improve both designs.

I managed a snug fit on the threads, so the tool is held in place like with any other Dremel-holder
in addition to the shaft being supported from all sides.

(moved) dremel milling toolhead for RepMan

I just purchased a Dremel Moto-Tool 380-5 for $15 at a flea market with this project in mind.

Frickin awesome idea MaskedRetriever.

I'm guessing this'll be one of those harder-than-it-looks jobbies, but I can't wait to see how it comes out.

Haha , good work TMR !

I did some drawings for this over the weekend but have not translated to blender yet.

Some modifications that I included, the 'holder' for the tool is a taper on it so it gets smaller at the bottom.

The tool itself is held in by a split taper that inserts into it.

This has the advantage of being able to change the tool mount without the bracket.

I will mod and re-release this idea when RL stops getting in the way ;)

Nice idea, it could be improved by attemting to follow the thread for the dremels shank like all the attachments that dremel supply. Once I get round to making stuff I may give that a go if anyone else hasnt by then . . . .

I do like!

Do you have a good model of the Dremel Flex-Shaft or the Dremel itself?
I
´m currently trying to design a milling-head for the RepMan but Blender
is not exactly easy when it comes to designing things to fit exact meassurements.

The real weak point in this is how weakly the holder matches the dremel-- Blender's loop cut operation (ctrl-r) should make it fairly easy to tweak the profile on the inside, though...
