Summary

Parametric Lego Mindstorms Mecanum Wheel 82 mm (iteration 2).

The Mecanum Wheel can be printed without any support structures.

Needed Parts for building a single wheel:

8x MecanumWheel_Roller  
1x MecanumWheel2_Left (or MecanumWheel2_Right)  
8x Lego Axle 5L (length=39.6 mm, PartNr 32073)  

Also added are the files with name containing the word "_printable". These files have been slightly modified so that my 3D printer prints them more accurately.

The roller's profile has been generated based on following model:

Remark:

  • To build a four wheel robot one needs 2 left wheels and 2 right wheels. It is possible to drive sideways using these wheels
  • The current model is fully printed in PLA. It might be better to print the rollers in Ninjaflex or perhaps paint the PLA rollers with rubber paint to avoid slipping of the wheels.
  • Printing the base of the wheel in PLA is much easier then printing it in ABS. So I recommend using PLA for the base of the wheel.

  • the inner wheel is now hollow, requiring much less material to print it; it is therefor also much lighter
  • drawback is that the wheel can only be used from one side.

We would like to make these wheels for our Lego robot. The first wheel has very tight holes and the pin does not fit in it. The axle hole in the middle is also very small - it is impossible to fit the axle in it. Is it intended or have we used wrong printer setting? Is it ok to drill it manually?
We have used PLA and the printable version of files.

The printable version of the STL have been created specially for my own Prusa i3 printer. The normal version of the files are the exact dimensions, which would be perfect to use if your printer prints exactly. So my recommendation would be to NOT use the "printable" version of the STL's, but use the normal ones. If your printer is not accurate you could consider using OpenSCAD to generate the STL's especially for your own printer. On the other hand, most of the time, the standard STL's will be good enough after some postprocessing work (drilling holes, milling the axle hole)

Anyway, no big issue if you used the "printable" version. Just drill the holes with the correct drill size (4.8 and 5.0 mm). The cross hole you need to enlarge using a Dremel like tool (at least that is how I make the Lego axles fit perfectly)

Thanks for info, I have also Prusa i3. For me is important to know, that drilling is required, so I will try to finish it with drimmel...
And I will print the second wheel from the other file and compare.
