I wonder if it is possible to create these sculptures by writing the letters below each other. Two viewing angles perpendicular to the long axis give the different words. The structure would be much smaller, but will have the same effect. Or is there a reason why that is not possible?

It's perfectly possible. I would suggest downloading OpenSCAD (http://openscad.org) and take a look at this design. This design is extremely simple and just meant as an example of what you can do with just a few operations in OpenSCAD, as well as meant as a starting point for people wanting to do similar things.

btw, Customizer doesn't render this too well, but if you increase the convexity on the linear extrude calls, it will display right.

The customizer sends this error message:

Current top level object is not a 3D object.

(even with the LOVE-HATE - example).

What's going wrong?

See description - this will won't work in Customizer until MakerBot upgrades their servers.
..but it will work in OpenSCAD-2015.02 (or the latest development snapshot). See http://openscad.org/downloads.html

Customizer Updated! :)

You only need the main diagonal cubes to be able to read from 45 and -45 degree view.

Hey, long time :)
Not sure I understand what you mean..
