Summary

This is a longer version of the Snake, even more fun and bendy than the original. It's too large to fit on a Makerbot or ToM, so you will need something like a RapMan or RepRap to print it. Or you could chop it in half and print in two parts.

There are two versions. The default LongSnake is designed to have a center core section that is two filament widths thick. LongSnakeThin has a thinner, single filament thick center, so it's more flexible as a result. I recommend the thin version for PLA, at least. Both are oriented diagonally on the printbed to fit nicer.

Dimensions:
LongSnake: 137.4mm x 137.4mm x 11.1mm tall (190mm long)
LongSnakeThin: 144.3mm x 144.2mm x 11.7mm tall (199.5mm long)

The thin version is slightly larger because Skeinforge was giving me trouble. I have been printing with 0.3mm layers and 2.0 width/thickness, so increasing the center thickness to just slightly over 0.6mm helped a lot.

Without a raft I created a two headed monster =-O !

I changed colors part way through, which resulted in a colored contouring reminiscent of a snake. I had no idea it would turn out so well, but I'll bet it would work even better with several color changes.

I used a Solido SD300, but you could get the same contouring (or better!) from an FDM printer. If using ABS, try feeding various colors and see if they create snake-color contours. Or use colored markers like the Penstruder in http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5590http://www.thingiverse.com/thi...

Just made a yellow and red FDM snake. I scaled things up a notch though to 11 inches long.

Wow, that yellow really pops! The bright colors
&
amp; contrast are perfect for this toy-like model.

I really like all the color variants people have posted so far! I hope someone will post a Makerbot version with a marbled/mixed-color transition.

I scaled Longsnake to 70% and he printed easily on my ToM. Looks (and moves) great. Thank you.

Gotta get my Mendel built, though - really want to see him loooooooonger.

That's actually a great idea! The original Snake is a little chubby, I think, but this one shrunken down sounds perfect for Cupcakes or ToM.

I'm glad you like it!

I like this concept. True snake vertabrae are incredible the way they interlock. Id love to see a printable model with anotomically accurate vertebrae. At my local museum (Museum of South Australia), they have a snake vertabrae model (although it looks like it is cast rather than 3d printed) and it is really cool to see how the interlocking works but still allows flexibility.
