So, I had to reprint the foot, I changed settings so now the threaded part has way more infill than the rest. It came out pretty heavy, but it works perfectly.
I just used it, to filter aluminium dust, which I produced while I used a Dremel on some aluminium heatsink to make it fit my graphics card.

Well, a simple fix would be to drill a hole through the broken off part and into the main part, squirt some epoxy or super glue into the hole and put in a rod of some kind. If you're using 2.85mm filament, a piece of that would probably work. If not, a nail, screw, a piece of a pen, you get the idea.

But the infill was at about 20 percent... I think, I have to drill the hole through the entire width of the foot and attach a very long bold and a nut. this could work i guess. or, I try my new abs filament and print the foot again -.-

Hey Sneakypoo, just wanted to thank you for this awesome project. It was literally the first thing I have ever printed and now I'm hooked. I bought a fan controller (it's just a 30x30x10mm PCB with a knob switch) hoping to modify the foot of this project to include some sort of cavity to install the switch. I haven't had luck yet in my modification.

This one finally convinced me to clean up my workplace from solder fume. I already bought a carbon filter ten years ago but never finalised my small project - there were always other things of higher importance :-)

As I saw this sketch I instantly decided to print it. As a small improvement I paused printing of the foot shortly before finishing the top-layer and filled in fine sand to make it a bit heavier - that really worked fine and gives the whole constuction a bit more stability.

This is great design thanks. Is there a reason the chamber is so large? Would love to see a compact version as I think it would be just as effective plus cut down on print time and filament.

ok, this comment is a bit older but I like to mention, that a lot of carbon-filter you can get ar 130 x 130 mm and that fits perfectly into that big chamber. And it is also good to have a big surface for the intake to get as much fume as possible.

Awesome design! However, it is prone to snapping at the base of the shaft if its printed upright and the way its structurally loaded. Would probably be best to separate the shaft into a different part, print it horizontally, and lightly press fit it into the foot plus some glue. Nonetheless, this beats paying for a fume extractor!

I gave that idea a try here http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2105359 . Not sure if it works yet. Especially because I was pushing the limits of tinkercad to make this.

what do I scale it to if my fan is 70.1mm by 70.1mm? thx

Simple: If you want to scale if to 70mm from the original 120mm, simply calculate 70/120 = 0.58333 = 58.33%.

I can confirm that you can print this scaled down to fit a 80mm fan.

having trouble printing the back (fume_extractor_back.stl). Do you print that with support or not ? especially on the round cylinder where the know fits in

No support needed, oriented with the round cylinder as the "top" part.


Just wondering what infill percentage you printed the base. My base came out perfectly, but I just barely tested the strength of the rod portion, and it snapped right off.


I think I may have fixed the problem here http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2105359 . Not sure if it works yet. Especially because I was pushing the limits of tinkercad to make this. But, you can give the parts a try and see how it works.

I honestly don't remember, it's been 2 years since I printed it. If I were to guess, it was probably 20% and 0.1mm layer height. If you don't feel like upping the infill percentage, you could drill a hole through it and glue in a piece of filament as reinforcement perhaps?

Yeah, I'll probably just take the endcap off, and fill it with some epoxy or something. It's a really pretty design. Just frustrated that the thing snapped off, before I could even put it together. No worries, I'll sort it out.


Had the same problem, snappet right off.. filled it with hotglue in both ends then epoxy on the "snap" and its strong as a bull :-D

This is genius, thanks for sharing. Now I don't have to make my own! I printed it, and used a switch with a battery and can just flip the on off switch. Why pay 60 dollars when you can make your own!

What are you using for a power source?

Just a random wall wart I had lying around. Probably from an old router or something like that.

Anyway you can scale this down to 80mm pc fan size? my I2 just cant print this the mouth of this thing is huge.

Perhaps you can try to print it at 0.67 scale? I might go in and change all the measurements for an 80mm but don't hold your breath, I think it will be a bit of a pain to do.

Thats fine, I was just curious if its to much of a paint ill just play around with it and see if i cant get it to work.

I printed the front head piece yesterday. Took quite a bit longer than I thought and I needed to sleep so I cut it short at about ~80-90% of the way through at around 3AM. Took about ~8 hours to get to that point and had probably another hour or two to go. The result is that my head doesn't have any lip up front at all, but I think it will still work fine.

I'm going to also try using some cuttable carbon filter pads for an aquarium that I can get from my local PetLand for $9. Just gotta print the stand and wait for my fan to arrive from deal extreme.

Definately the largest thing I've tried printing yet on my Prusa Mendel.
No problems slicing or loading this in pronterface.

I printed it with 0.3mm layer height, PLA, 15% infill, 2 perimeters.

Yeah it'll work fine without the lip. I just added that in case someone wanted to attach something to the front to keep the filters in place. I didn't find it was really needed though. If needed you could drill holes in the four corners and stretch some wire in a cross shape in the front to keep the filters in place.

What plastic did you print this in? I tried with abs and the shrinkage was insane. The whole filter holder was unusable.

I'm only set up for PLA so that's what I used.

This may be a stupid question, but how do you power your PC fan?

You can also find various dedicated power supplies, switches, and adapters to power PC fans on Amazon and Ebay, etc. Usually for just a few bucks, if you're not comfortable with soldering, etc.

There are no stupid questions. PC fans normally run on 12V. In my case I use an old PC power supply because my fan happens to have a standard molex plug but you could use any type of "wall wart" you might have that gives out 12V DC. It could be from an old charger/radio/modem or whatever. Just check the label and see if it gives out the correct voltage. You can get away with lower voltage but the fan will run slower. If the voltage is too low it simply will not turn, you might see it jerk a bit though.

The red wire will be your positive and the black is your negative. Your wall wart will have markings on it which show what part of the plug is positive and which is negative so hook it up accordingly.

Wow, slicing the head resulted in a gcode over half a million lines long, and pronterface can't handle it. Just hangs when I hit print. I like the design, but really having a hard time getting it to print.

Well... yeah, it's pretty huge :D I get the same kind of code size but I didn't have any trouble printing it and I used Pronterface as well. Not really sure what to do about it I'm afraid. Maybe try older/newer versions of Pronterface or try another program entirely? Sorry I couldn't be of more help, hopefully someone else will have an idea.

Tried again and now it works for some reason. Will take 14 hours to print though, so will start it another day, so it doesn't finish at 3 in the morning ;)

Nice, good to hear :) My print took 11 hours, didn't sleep well that night... hehe. Also, please post a pic if you finish it, I'd love to see it.

Unfortunately while printing the foot, the extruder motor hit the threaded rods after 8 hours of printing because of the sheer height of the print, so 122 grams of PLA wasted :/ should have measured it beforehand. What did you print yours on?

Aww man, sorry to hear that. I printed mine on an Ultimaker. If you still want to have a go at it I could probably cut the foot in two and add a few guide pins so you could glue them together? How much height do you have to work with?

How long before the carbon filter needs to be replaced?

No idea I'm afraid. I'm guessing how much dust you have in the air, how much and how often you solder, the type of filter you use and all manner of things would play a big role. Maybe it would be a good idea to have a look at commercial products and see what they recommend? My guess is that it lasts for a pretty long time for hobby use though :)

Oh and I wouldn't trust that just a simple carbon fiber filter would catch all the nasties, you'd probably need a couple different types of filters for that. But, at the very least it gets the fumes away from your face and it should catch some of the nasties. I find it smells less at least, so it's gotta be doing something good :D
