UPDATE 2-15-2016
This version is now outdated. There is a much better version here:

This Thing is for my Thingifriends who are interested in investing in precious metals. I'm sure you've all probably heard the saying "If you don't hold it, you don't own it." So if you do hold it, you will probably want to keep it organized.

This storage box is compatible with PAMP Suisse and Credit Suisse 1 gram to 50 gram gold/silver/platinum/palladium bars in assay cards (which includes the popular 1 oz size shown here). It may also work with other refiners such as APMEX or Sunshine, providing that the assay card is roughly credit card sized.

This was originally intended to be made out of 1/4" aluminum pieces and screwed together, but I wanted to get the dimensions perfect before I started to machine. Just the same, it is still a good little thing so I thought I would share.

Just print. Lid is optional but recommended.

Alex, thanks for the compliment about the box, but it's nothing special. It was just a quick mock-up for a metal version that I was making for a little while. It was printed on an Ultimaker. As for the gold prices, I tend to think gold and other commodities are in a deflationary cycle now, so believe it or not, I think that cash is king at the moment. Even during the first stages of a market panic, prices on commodities first tend to crash lower as well. That would probably be the best time to buy. But who can tell?

I think with the economy flying so high gold and especially silver are the best investments to make. Everyone is going to be crying when the dow goes down to 10,000 and the nasdaq retracts to 3500. They will eventually go back up and to even higher levels. Thats when we will be laughing ll the way to the bank. What kind of 3d printer did you use? I would love to make a box like that. Its design is sleek looks good and would fit in my safe. I would just make the box black. Email me at [email protected] Thanks buddy!

i am not quite shure if a gold collection is something, the average thingiverse user owns.. :)
resized we can use it for SD cards though.

Hey, don't underestimate the the average Thingiverse user. I've got 28 downloads on it already, so some of us must have some PMs. Besides, it works just as well for silver at $30/once. Incidentally, most of the bars in the back of the above collection are silver, although I do recommend silver Canadian Maple Leafs instead because the premium on them is much, much lower than the bars.

I've learned that there are always others that can use even the most specific and peculiar things - for instance, I uploaded "1991 Honda CRX Tail Light Trim Panels" and it is my second most popular item at 215 downloads to date. What I'm saying is, it never hurts to share. Cheers!

GIABO Thingifriend!!

Just a hedge against inflation, is all. The stock market is getting swollen, you'd have to be on acid to buy bonds, and just having money sit in the bank actually loses you money when inflation kicks in. So I figured it might be cool to have a little gold and silver safely hidden in my underwear drawer.
