Summary

I based this upgrade on http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:42250 from whpthomas. Please follow his directions for items you need.

Changes that I have made:
Shorter arm so that it can fit into the 2X on both sides
Big feed hole
Using the top left and right screw holes to hold the base against the motor
Added a groove so that it is possible to add a screw from the front to keep the arm in position
Added a way to hold a nuts at the back for the two screws that will go through the arm

Instructions

I used ReplicatorG and I used the default Replicator 1 profile to slice. I am running the latest ReplicatorG and Sailfish

For all three items
Object fill 25%
Layer height 0.27
Number of shells 1
Temperature 245
Makerbot Black ABS

For the pin
Feedrate 30
Travel feedrate 60

For arm and base plate
Feedrate 60
Travel feedrate 100

Can you use the original spring and bearing?

If you mean the original from whpthomas then yes. If you mean the original that is currently in the 2X then no for the spring. I am not sure about the bearing, I didn't measure it yet. The current spring in the 2X is tiny, really tiny. I believe what happens is that the spring loses its, hmm spring :) very shortly after you start printing and the clogging will get bad over a period of a couple of weeks. Best to get this printed before you can't print anymore

This is really beautiful work. Does this work better than the extruder in the 2x? The main reason to upgrade the extruder in the older machines is that the spring tension works better than the plunger. But the 2x has a spring tension extruder already.

For me the original one on the 2X doesn't work at all, maybe it is the humidity in Brisbane, maybe it is the constant heat in our house that softens the filament. I don't know, but from the start I wasn't able to get the motor to grab the filament like they show on the videos, except sometimes in the early mornings I could print and then for a day or two I might not be able to print again

Wow. Sounds like the spring tension is too strong!
