Summary

We, are the Crystal Gems!

My first ever prop 3D Modeling project, trying to create some usable gem shapes for costume props. The idea is to print these out, then smooth them off and silicone mould them to be case as resin props afterwards.

I, too, only get the large gem! Could someone please tell me if this is a common problem, and if so, how to fix it? I just want to be able to print individual gems, and see the other gems!

Opening the file with Microsoft ''3D Builder'' will only load the second to largest gem. You need to edit the file to remove te other gems in order to print single gems.

I am opening this in Makerbot and it still only loads the one gem. Also, thanks for making this! I hope to be able to print it soon. Love the show!

Nevermind! Figured it out myself!

  • Go here: http://www.freecadweb.org/wiki/?title=Download
  • Download that
  • Open the Stl file you downloaded
  • Select the file "crystal gems" under "model"
  • In the drop down that says "Start" Change that to "Mesh Design"
  • Select "crystal gems" again
  • Use the icon that looks like scissors cutting something found in the top left over the words "combo view"
  • Use your mouse to make a box around the gems you don't want, then when you have the box, right click and select "Inner"
(conversely, to save time, you can select the one gem you do want and select "outer")
-When you have the gem you want to print left, go to file and then click "export" or just hit control + E
  • Save the file as a mesh, and then save it to a place you can find it
  • drag that file from where you saved it over onto the makerbot program or load it in and there you go!
Only took me 5 min or so to do this once i figured it out and got the hang of it! You are welcome!

hey, you should do a remix of this with this "fix" done... i'd be cool =D
(im telling it to you so you take the credit for it)

The two smaller gems are not on the platform. Is that intentional? Sorry, I'm new here.

Surely that would entirely depend on the size of your build platform?

But really, you're supposed to break it up and print the gem you want, one or two at a time.

I have someone wanting me to make them the sapphire gem for a cosplay. Is it included in here? I am having difficulty finding a picture reference. lol

If so, what is the scale size of one of these?

The triangularly faceted one is Sapphire's, but I'm not sure about the scale size. I think you would have to load it into your 3D printer's program to know for sure. I designed a similar Sapphire gem to the one shown here, if you want to know, I just checked and it's it's 53 mm by 53 mm, plus 10 mm tall.

These are really great, I didn't even see these until I made my gems on Tinkercad ^^'

Whenever I try to print only 1 gem shows up? Anyone able to explain why?

Totally going to hollow one out and see if I can get some NeoPixels in it for my Steven cosplay!

Oh, you mean like this?

:D

Yes exactly! Did you make a hollow version?

Not hollow, no, I embedded the electronics directly into the Resin and they function fine.
I played about with using just single, large LEDs to get the translucent resin to glow nicely as well it worked pretty well:

These are polyurethane cast clear resin with pigment in them, cast in a silicone mould made from a cleaned up 3D print.

Oooh okay. I plan on printing in Translucent filament, so I'll have to modify it a bit to fit the sensors directly in the print.
