This mount works with most makerbot style extruders with a cooling fan. For maximizing the stability, there are two clamps that hold the extruder motor body and the fan.

The OpenScad source file is parametric, so you can adjust the dimensions to fit your extruder or X carriage.

You will need:

  • Four M4x25mm screws
  • Four M4 Nuts (nylon nut is recommended)
  • Four M3x50mm screws
  • Four M3 Nuts (nylon nut is recommended)


The attached stl file was designed for cheap chinese GEEETECH Mk8 extruder.

You may need to adjust some variable for your extruder.

tol: adjust this value from 0.2 to 0.5 depend on your printer's setting
motor_mount_width: motor mounting bracket's width.
motor_size: width and height of your motor

fan_mount_width, fan_mount_size: default value is designed for the 40mm fan.

holes_offset: translate whole mounting holes
holes: mounting holes positions.

It's intended for M8 bars, but you can always adjust the hole positions (find .scad and render yours) for your own carriage.

Good fan mount with this? Also the throat going into the heating block on mine looks a lot longer than ones ive seen on here after installing this, are different ones being used or how is it being shortened?

What about the endstop? With this mount the stepper pushes it when it goes home?

It depends on the setup.
For my printer, the mount frame pushes an endstop. You may attach an additional structure for your endstop.

Mine is the original prusa i3 rework, where the endstop is located on the right, on the x end idler, pushed by the stepper when It goes home.

That's also OK as long as you adjust the endstop position.

Yes, it's the 3D printed one.

I uploaded "mountingBlock_lever.zip". Find the .scad source file and exported STL files there.
There're two versions: for MK7 and MK8 hobbed gear. Pick yours. Also, it's customizable with the OpenSCAD (find [gearEffectiveDiameter] parameter).

Note) I reused some metal parts from the original Chinese Geeetech drive. So, the STL solely cannot make the complete working part.

where are the files for the back piece that mounts to the bars and belt

can someone post a pic of how the x axis belt mounts to this?

Have you put any thought into adding a proximity sensor on to this mount so you can do self leveling?

Maybe next version. I have busy days now.
Of course I'll try to add a sensor mount but I cannot promise when it will be.
Anyway the source code (.scad) is opened and it's free to remix. How about try to study OpenScad and try by yourself?

I just printer this and now i need an adapter bracket to mount the inductive sensor. anyone can point me to a design that can be used with the mk8 direct extruder?

Hi, Thanks for posting this, it was exactly what I needed. It printed nicely and I'll post a picture soon. I can't find the piece it bolts to, which has the bearing mounts. I searched here and other sites and can't find one that has the matching four bolt holes. Could you provide a link?

It works with Prusa i3 Rework X carriage, like thing 586636 or http://reprap.org/wiki/Prusa_i3_Rework_Introduction .

Anyway you can easily customize the hole locations by tweaking the [hole_offset] a [holes] variable in the provided OpenScad file.

i was not able to get my normal j head to work, so i got a mk8. it looks great, hope it works well

why not to connect via screws that are at the back side of the stepper?

Just for simplicity and the balance (=the center of the gravity is getting near to the center of the carriage)
