This cabinet latch can help keep kids safe by making it much harder to figure out how to open the cabinet. Works for pets too!
We had some child safety latches on our cabinets and they worked pretty well. We wanted to put them on all our cabinets so we went to the hardware store to get some more.
They didn't have the exact same ones, but we bought some that looked similar, brought them home and installed the first one. It didn't work right. If you adjusted it so it would catch properly, you couldn't close the cabinet. If you adjusted it so you could close the cabinet, then it wouldn't catch. The design of the arm was just shaped wrong. We tried sanding and cutting and that kinda sorta made it work right but it weakened it so much it broke.
Another trip to the hardware store yielded a completely different design, with two arms. It didn't work either, in fact it simply couldn't be made to work on a hinged cabinet door. It might have worked with a drawer, but not anything that swings in an arc.
Finally, searching the internet revealed that the company that made the original ones didn't exist any more. But of course, if you have a 3D printer and CAD software you can make stuff like this, so that's what we did. We modified the original arm to make it super-easy to 3D print without support. It uses four #6 x 1/2" self tapping screws for each one.
