This is a work in progress for improving the mechanics of the thwackers in our Store Front Music Project.

The thwackers mechanism houses a solenoid that when pulsed with current throws the attached lever arm. The lever is made from an old plastic clothes hanger.

The general steps required make the thwacker are

  1. Download the files
  2. Cut on Laser Cutter
  3. Assemble
  4. Mount on pegboard

Please also see "Store Front Music Solenoid Thwacker Unit - Electronics"

Assemble: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-CRASH-Space-Store-Front-Music-t/

In context: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zugpKxPxAE8

  • It can go into 1-inch spaced peg board and then has an inch to slide for fine tuning
  • Removable mallets (white coat hanger part) for transport

Things you might want to change:

  • longer screws with a nut to mount solenoids so they can be tightened from the bottom

What are "thwackers"?

The dictionaries do not carry that word.

We'll post a video when you can see them in action. As a working definition to propose to the OED - Thwacker: Mechanized lever arm capable of hitting other items with a sound that is similar to the phonetic pronunciation of THWACK.

I think in this case "thwacker" refers to the foot pedal drum beater, similar to this: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6765141.htmlhttp://www.freepatentsonline.c... , making this an automated drum beater.

Maybe I have it wrong, though, so hopefully crashspacela can confirm or clarify.
